Sunday Read: The New York Times‘ Ten Best (US) Books of 2009

Read reviews and excerpts/author interviews for each of the NYT’s top ten titles from the USA in 2009:

After so many years, and so many lists, you might think the task of choosing the 10 Best Books would get easier. If only. The sublime story collections alone created agonies of indecision. So did the superb literary biographies we read — and deeply admired. But in the end the decisions had to be made.

Not that drawing up the list — or rather, whittling it down — was a wholly painful exercise. One of the pleasures it afforded was the chance to resample the sometimes surprising chemistry of reviewers and authors, particularly when it came to fiction.

Notes from the Launch of Exclusive Books’ The List 2009

A special report from Emily Amos.

How do book lovers, publishers, authors and the literary media know they’re facing the end of the year and the start of the Christmas rush?

That’s it, yes – Exclusive Books’ The List is out. Held at Mangiare restaurant on Melrose Arch’s Piazza, the 2009 launch of The List was fresh, fun, gorgeously lime-green and buzzing!

This year, The List sports “68 of the Best Books in 2009” and the approach is a little different, incorporating a new element, “The Blurb” – a tribute to that spiel on the back of a book which entices and convinces book lovers to buy it.

EB customers can look forward to finding a Blurb staff member in each store, ready to share all the inside information on all these books. Look out for the Blurb t-shirted EB staff when it comes to choosing Christmas presents!

Fans will see Spud – Learning to Fly, “Oprah’s” The Story of Edgar Sawtelle and Stieg Larson’s books included on this year’s List. SA sports lovers and fans should be storming the stores to get their hands on John Smit’s biography, Captain in the Cauldron by Mike Greenway. Strictly embargoed (not for sale) until 14 November, fans can nevertheless order their copies now. Asked how he felt about Captain in the Cauldron being included on this year’s List, author Mike Greenway said, “It’s quite something for a reporter to get on The List!”. He shared how John Smit is not sure how to react to the life-size cut outs of himself now being displayed in EB stores nationwide. During the launch, Smit told how launching this book was quite “nerve wracking” – something a little different for the rugby star.

Another book that should sell like hot cakes is Justin Bonello’s Cooked in Africa. Based on the TV series fans should eat it up. Bonello described his journey into the book world as a real “blast” saying there are some things you expect in life and others you don’t. His three wishes in life have been to do stand up comedy (accomplished years ago); publish a book and sing on a stage. “Two out of three isn’t bad” he joked.

Authors Kevin Richardson (Part of the Pride) and Marlene van der Westhuizen (Sumptuous) looked like they were having fun as they shared each other’s books. Richardson said he was “amazed and overwhelmed” at being on the List. He hasn’t stopped since the book came out and hopes others may be inspired by his story of working with lions. Van der Westhuizen told how “very surprised, pleased, thrilled and honoured” she feels to also be on this year’s List. In her speech, Exclusive Books’ Batya Green-Bricker confessed to keeping Sumptuous at her bedside.

Vodacom’s Alan Knott-Craig expressed how pleased he is to have his book, Second is Nothing included on The List. He laughingly told how, “It’s much harder to sell a book than airtime!”. Moeletsi Mbeki joined the sparkling crowd, “very excited” to have his new book, Architects of Poverty on The List.

Long Walk to Freedom (children’s version) author, Chris van Wyk wowed the crowd with his energy and humour, keeping guests laughing with the “non-boring-board-meeting” version of how he came to write the book.

And the final word of the day? From Batya Green-Bricker – “We live in Superfreakanomic times indeed but Be Fearless said Max Lucado; Act Like a Lady Think Like a Man. Have a Little Faith said Mitch Albom for wherever your inspiration comes from life is short, and I agree with Spud Milton who said, ‘Learn to fly, be the brightest star in the sky’ and enjoy what I think Richard Dawkins’ would call The Greatest Show on Earth – The List, 68 of the best books of 2009”.

Exclusive Books press release

The most riveting, langverwagte, visionary, superbly-penned, audacious, eye popping genius-infused List of books is about to hit our shelves, because the countdown has begun to the official announcement on 23 October, of the Exclusive Books bumper selection of 68 of the best books to give or get this festive season.

The List, offers the choice books of 2009 in one place. Lovingly compiled by the Exclusive Books managers, bibliophiles can look forward to an A-Z of fabulous reading from Afrikaans, biographies, collectable box sets and business books, to children’s titles, cookery, current affairs, fiction, humour, inspiration, lifestyle, nature, reference, sci-fi, and of course, books for sports lovers.

“The development of The List is a labour of love on the part of our staff and we believe that it reflects the very best books available,” says Jaco Nel, marketing manager of Exclusive Books.

“We cater for a broad spectrum of tastes with our Festive Season selection and look for special books that make memorable gifts. People often find it hard to find the right book and The List is the result of years of customers asking for help with gift books.”

“Exclusive Books is always right on top of trends in bookselling and The List reflects this insight.”

Afrikaans features real culture in a “Smullekker” cookbook from Emila le Roux and Francois Smuts, a range of “stoepstories” from Deon Meyer in Karoonag en Ander Verhale and Dana Snyman’s Op die Toneel: stories, reise, stemme, and the “skreeusnaaks” memoirs of Koos Kombuis in Die Tyd van die Kombi’s.

Larger than life heroes feature strongly in the biographies, from a poignant tribute to Chris Hani, to Barack Obama’s journey to power, to the wild adventures of intrepid explorers Kingsley Holgate and Ranulph Fiennes.

Business inspiration comes from investment guru Warren Buffet’s Management Secrets to Alan Knott-Craig’s Second is Nothing, the riveting account of his involvement in building Vodacom, to the suprising collaboration between 50 cent and Robert Greene in The 50th Law.

Current affairs cover a contentious kaleidoscope of politics and history from Dinosaurs, Diamonds and Democracy by Francis Wilson to The World according to Julius Malema by Max du Preez and Mandy Roussouw, to the megapopular Superfreakonomics by Steven D Levitt and Stephen J Dubner.

Cookery reflects a strong return to home cooking and African influences in books such as A Farm in my Heart: From the Yard to the Table and Pantry by Emelia le Roux and Francois Smuts to Cooked in Africa by BBC presenter Justin Bonello, with a touch of decadence added by Marlene van der Westhuizen’s gorgeous book on French cooking, Sumptuous.

Nataniel’s Gatherings: A year of Invitations offers an opulent but informal peek into get-togethers in his home.

Fiction focuses on the hits of 2009, including the Twilight series by Stepheni Meyer, Stieg Larsen’s trilogy and bestsellers, such as Dan Brown’s The Lost Symbol, Barbara Kingsolver’s The Lacuna, Wilbur Smith’s Assegai and Marian Keyes The Brightest Star in the Sky.

Inspiration focuses on the core issues of conquering fear and finding faith, hope and love.

Best seller The Shack by William P Young features as does the must-read Act like a Lady, Think Like a Man by Steve Harvey.

On a lighter note Zapiro returns with Don’t mess with the Presidents’ Head while John Farndon Offers the odd yet challenging read, Do you think you’re Clever?

The QI Book of the Dead by John Lloyd and John Mitchinson continues the quirky theme with a biographical dictionary full of hilarious facts and details about famous and obscure people, now dead.

Two predators, lions and sharks feature in the nature genre, with Part of the Pride by Kevin Richardson and Great white and Eminent Grey by Chris Fallows, offering new understanding of these magnificent creatures.

Science takes on creationists and looks at the wonders in the everyday world, while legendary sci-fi writer Eoin Colfer offers his sixth novel in The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy series with And Another Thing….

Sport scores bit hits with Captain in the Cauldron – The John Smit Story and the Big Book of Top Gear 2010.

Kalahari’s Answer to Homebru: “South African Books to Shout About”

June 12th, 2009 by Sophy

Alert! Kalahari.net has launched a new SA Lit promotion called “South African Books to Shout About” that bears a more than passing similarity to the Exclusive Books Homebru promotion – both in its number and range of featured titles.

BOOK SA members on the list include André Brink, Simon Gear, Dora Taylor, JH Thompson (Jacqui Mansfield), John van de Ruit, Megan Voysey-Braig and Zukiswa Wanner.

There’s more hullabaloo with Homebru, of course, but it’s nice to see Kalahari getting in on the SA Lit cheerleading act.

SpudCurrently, Kalahari is running a promotion-within-the-promotion, too: order Spud: Learning to Fly and buy any book from the “South African Books to Shout About” list and you’ll get a total 30% off your Spud order. A clever way of hitching the SA Lit wagon to the the Spud star…
