Van Schaik Opens Bookshop in Maponya Mall, Soweto

December 11th, 2009 by Jani

Van Schaik BookstoreMaponya MallAlert! A new bookseller is giving the Maponya Mall in Soweto a chance.

It will be recalled that Exclusive Books opened there to some fanfare in 2007 – but didn’t last terribly long. (Click here for a post about visiting EB Maponya.) Now Van Schaik, the academic book retailer, has opened its 46th shop in the mall.

It would seem that the shop plans to dabble in trade retail, too: it opened with a launch for Rose of Soweto, the biography of Dingaan Thobela (who was present) last Saturday.

Here’s the press release:

Press Release

Van Schaik Bookstore opens in Soweto

Soweto based school learners, university students and book lovers need to look no further than Maponya Mall, for all their academic and leisure book needs, with the opening of Van Schaik Bookstore in December 2009. As the first academic bookstore in Soweto, it will cater to a market of over four million people.
“An academic bookstore is long overdue in the area and will make the lives of learners and students much easier,” says Van Schaik Bookstore MD, Stephan Erasmus.

“Van Schaik will offer school textbooks and we will cater specifically for students studying at the University of Johannesburg‘s Soweto campus and UNISA students based in Soweto; Nursing and medical students who are studying and working at Baragwanath Hospital will also hugely benefit from our stock.”
“Overall, the shop aims to be a real resource to the community of Soweto by providing access to the books that the community needs.”

Author of The Rose of Soweto, Dingaan Thobela, launched his book at the new bookstore on 5 December 2009.

Schools will get a 12% discount on sales of R10 000 and more as well as R5 000 worth of books for sales of R40 000 and more.

The company has made a substantial investment in stock, shop fittings and provides employment to the community of Soweto. Now we invite all learners, parents, students and the general public to support us and find the book that would take you places,’ says Van Schaik Bookstore MD, Stephan Erasmus.
