Alert! Remember dis.grace, the François Naudé and Stacy Hardy conceptual art project that converts JM Coetzee’s Disgrace into a rather transfixing Google Image search string? Now, another artist is getting into the Coetzee-as-art act: 2010 Standard Bank Young Artist Award winner in the Visual Art category Michael MacGarry is using Coetzee’s Youth as a component in his latest work, LHR to JHB:
The exhibition will be a hybrid of a number of concerns. The one is a film that looks in part at a problematised whiteness that also has a post-colonial slant. It deals with the brain drain. It’s 26 minutes long, what is essentially five versions of myself. Slightly forward slant, not historic or right now.
Called LHRJHB (London to Joburg), it will be looped to a voice-over narrative containing extracts from JM Coetzee’s Youth. The actual life raft is a prop that goes on the wall and there’s a bunch of props that are found and made.
LHR to JHB will be on exhibit at the 2010 National Arts Festival in Grahamstown.
