“Phendulani” is a Lit Quiz for Kids

October 1st, 2008 by Sophy

Ouma Ruby's SecretMadiba MagicMarj Brown is the mastermind behind the advent of Phendulani, a literary quiz for kids system which has found prominence in Pietermaritzburg, but will hopefully soon spread its roots to greater South Africa. Through the Phendulani project, kids are being encouraged to read with the simple understanding that reading is rewarding.

The first Kids Lit Quiz was held at Athlone Primary School in PMB, and was a great success, seeing follow-up quizzes at other primary schools in the area such as Northern Park Primary and Woodlands Primary. However, the project is not without its difficulties; one of these is in the expense of providing the required books to the participating schools:

The organisers try to provide the books for each participating school, but it is a costly endeavour. The schools that participate in the Kids Lit Quiz were asked to “twin” with another school and pay the R200 entrance fee into the quiz, and for some of the books for their “twin” school. Exclusive Books, the Publishers’ Association of South Africa (Pasa) and local publishers provided some of the books and there was some additional funding from Yarm School in Britain.

It is hoped that it will be possible, within the Pietermaritzburg and midlands region, to expand Phendulani and have satellite quizzes in more centres, including more pupils and providing books to more schools. In order to do this, the organisers need sponsorship from business and individuals.
