Litnet Heads to the Blogosphere

April 14th, 2008 by Ben - Editor

Litnet ScreenshotAlert! August SA literary uber-presence, Litnet - it’s so much more than just a mere “site” - is headed for the realm of web 2.0, and will soon add blogging to its many-tentacled online presence.

That’s according to an interview that Litnet founder-editor Etienne van Heerden gave in The Weekender. It’s a wide-ranging and highly engrossing convo with Fred de Vries; at one point van Heerden says, “We’re going to blogs now, joining the blogosphere. We’re also looking at social networking. And the LitNet academic journal, for which I’ve received funding.”

BOOK SA wonders with an eensy bit of mischief wherever van Heerden’s team got the idea. For the blogs, not the academic journal. :)

(And that’s the first smiley that I’ve ever typed for public consumption. Write down the date.)

As far as BOOK SA is concerned, the more literary blogs the merrier. Welcome to our party, Litnetters!

Do read the interview - one of the better pieces in The Weekender, for the literary-minded, of late:

ETIENNE van Heerden is one of SA’s most prolific and successful writers . Last year he published Asbesmiddag, a multifaceted tale about writing a novel. His previous book, In Stede van die Liefde (2005), is being translated into English, to be launched in the UK. Van Heerden has already finished a new novel, set in Amsterdam.

But I’m not meeting him at his favourite Cape Town hangout — the endearingly unfashionable La Perla in Sea Point — to talk about his writing career (he has been translated into 12 languages and won numerous awards), but about the man who nine years ago started one of the most intriguing South African websites: LitNet.
